Patagonia was begun as the clothing offshoot of a mountain climbing equipment company whose owners and staff cared deeply about product quality and simplicity of design and understood early on the depth of the environmental crisis. It took much longer for the company to understand the social and environmental harm caused in the course of its seemingly “clean” apparel business. Vincent Stanley will tell of the company’s turning points and continuous if rocky path toward greater social and environmental responsibility. He’ll also touch on why and how a consumer-products company can take a stand against disposability and careless consumption – and what lies ahead for Patagonia and other businesses seeking to do the right thing.
